Biography

I am a Cameroonian, and hold a PhD in Botany (Plant Ecology) from the University of Buea. I am a Lecturer in the Department of Plant Science, Faculty of Science. As an Aquatic Ecologist, I seek to gain a better understanding of the conservation of aquatic ecosystems by studying a broad spectrum of issues, including: the interactions of fresh water phytoplankton and macrophytes with their habitats, the impacts of non-native species on native plant assemblages and aquatic communities, water quality issues, vulnerability assessments of wetlands to climate change and other drivers of change. I recommend scientifically-sound ways of restoring degraded stream and riparian habitats. My research findings have been very essential in Plant Ecology and management. My findings in Lake Barombi Kotto showed stratification in phytoplankton community structure with depth and across time, and how human activities contribute to the observed patterns (Awo et al., 2018) These findings were confirmed in Awo et al., (2019) where the residents and users of Barombi Kotto gave their perception about ecosystem services provided by this lake and deterioration of the water quality over time (hyper-eutrophic trophic status). Another study (Awo et al., 2020) exposed the health risks associated with blooms of Microcystis species in this hypereutrophic lake. The most recent study in this wetland ecosystem has elucidated patterns of change in the riparian vegetation (Awo et al., 2021) and how these anthropogenically-driven changes influence riparian tree species composition and diversity.
